Jonathan Kearns Discusses Passive House and the Future of Canadian Infrastructure
Jonathan Kearns speaks with special guest host Tony Chapman on Newstalk 1010's The Evan Solomon Show about Passive House design and the future of infratructure in Canada.
Tony Chapman (TC): “I wanted to bring on an individual I met recently who struck me immediately as one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever talked to. Intelligent, not just tin terms of knowledge but the curious mind and passion that comes with saying “we can do things different”. His name is JK he’s a principal at an architect firm called Kearns Mancini. He started talking about a university residence that he was building and when you listen to this story imagine taking that kind mentality and using it against just about every infrastructure project we’re dealing with. So you were talking to me about building a residence for the university of Toronto is that correct?”
Jonathan Kearns (JK): “That’s correct”
TC: “What was the thing that put me just like gobsmacked that I said "that’s not possible"? What exactly are you doing with the energy on that building?”
JK: “Well first of all, I just want to clarify the fact that in this project that we are the Passive House architects and we’re creating the design specifications for a design builder to build the building. So we’re setting this up with the university to be an extremely low energy building and the way we’re doing that is using the German methodology of very high building envelope in other works the building enclosure becomes part of the machinery of the heating and cooling systems and it requires very little thermal energy to heat it and cool it.”
